چکیده

1 Ostwald ripening is the last stage of the evolution of a system with two coexisting phases. It is a relatively simple non-equilibrium phenomenon with several interesting features. For example, as the system coarsens it goes through a scaling state, one wich looks the same (up to an overall length scale, which grows) at all times. The dynamics of the problem can be mapped, in two dimensions, onto an evolving Coulomb system. In this work we present a brief summary of a novel theoretical approach to this problem, based on an analytic derivation (using a mean eld approach) of an eeective two-body interaction between droplets of the minority phase. The resulting interacting many-body dynamics is solved by a very eecient numerical algorithm, allowing us to follow the evolution of more than 10 6 droplets on a simple workstation. The results are in excellent agreement with recent experiments. We dedicate this paper to Leo Kadanoo on the occasion of his 60th birthday, and wish him many more years of fun and joy doing physics.

Simulation of Ostwald Ripening in Two Dimensions: Spatial and Nearest Neighbor Correlations

Recent experimental results on late stage coarsening (Ostwald ripening) in two dimensions were reinvestigated by means of numerical simulation using the Cahn-Hilliard equation (model B). We determine the spatial particle-particle and charge-charge correlation functions according to the experimental results of Krichevsky and Stavans. We nd that our numerical results correspond well with these ex...

Ostwald ripening in Two Dimensions : Correlations and

We present a systematic quasi-mean eld model of the Ostwald ripening process in two dimensions. Our approach yields a set of dynamic equations for the temporal evolution of the minority phase droplets' radii. The equations contain only pairwise interactions between the droplets; these interactions are evaluated in a mean-eld type manner. We proceed to solve numerically the dynamic equations for...

Domain Coarsening in Thin Films

We rigorously derive a mean-field model for Ostwald ripening in two-dimensional systems that arise in the growth of thin metallic films. This extends the classical LSW theory in two ways. First, it shows that an LSW-type model is also valid in two dimensions, even though the formal derivation seems less convincing than in three dimensions. Second, it clarifies the regime of validity and provide...

Synthesis and electrochemical properties of spherical and hollow-structured NiO aggregates created by combining the Kirkendall effect and Ostwald ripening.

The Kirkendall effect and Ostwald ripening were successfully combined to prepare uniquely structured NiO aggregates. In particular, a NiO-C composite powder was first prepared using a one-pot spray pyrolysis, which was followed by a two-step post-treatment process. This resulted in the formation of micron-sized spherical and hollow-structured NiO aggregates through a synergetic effect that occu...

Physical stability of nanosuspensions: investigation of the role of stabilizers on Ostwald ripening.

The effect of stabilizer type (small molecule vs. polymeric) and the amount of micellar solubilized drug on Ostwald ripening of nanosuspensions was investigated. Indomethacin nanosuspensions were prepared with small molecule stabilizers (sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Dowfax 2A1 (DF)) and a polymeric stabilizer (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC)). Two different drug:stabilizer ratios were ...
